Political system in Cuba

Nowadays, the Republic of Cuba is a socialist state presided by a single figure that acts as President of the Republic and Prime Minister, Second Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, and Commander in Chief.

This political system establishes the foundations of the defense of the popular democracy created after the 1959 revolution, and which has evolved into a truly socialist state. The very constitution affirms that Cuba is an irrevocably socialist state, and proscribes the modifications to the socio-economic regime, as well as only admitting a single political party, the Communist Party of Cuba.

The Government of Cuba is divided in three essential branches: the “Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular” (National Assembly of Popular Power) conforms the supreme organ of government and controls the constitutive and legislative power, as well as being endowed with the capacity to choose the components of the executive and judicial powers, and those of complementary organs. The Assembly Members (“Diputados”) only have to justify their actions to their constituents and the local “Asamblea Popular.” The superior organ that acts representing the parliament is the “Consejo de Estado” (Council of State) formed by the President and Prime Minister, the first and subsequent five vice-presidents, as well as a Secretary and other 23 members. The third branch is the Cabinet, leader of the executive power. It is formed by the President, and first Vice-President of the Council of State, the vice-presidents, Secretary, ministers, and presidents of ministerial institutions.

There are other three important entities: the Supreme Popular Court, exercising the judicial power; the General Republican Public Prosecution Office, to guarantee the legal status of the citizens and the institutions; and a third one known as “Controladoría General de la República”, auditing the economy and national finances.

Besides all this, Cuba also features a State Department, in charge of the security and control of the country; and a “Comité de Defensa Revolucionario” (Revolutionary Defense Committee), a NGO in charge of preserving the island both in terms of safety, cleaning, etc. It is formed by citizens who join the organization once they are fourteen years old.
